City of Phoenix “Transit Mayor”
Currently in her second and final term as Mayor of Phoenix, Gallego leads one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, but her focus on national ambitions has drawn criticism. Known as a “Transit Mayor,” Gallego has committed to a 35-year plan to expand Phoenix’s public transit system.
However, many argue this vision has neglected the immediate needs of Phoenix’s most underserved areas, particularly South Phoenix, where limited transit access continues to impact low-income families. While her plan aims to build a future transit network, residents facing daily challenges question if they can afford to wait decades for improvements.
Gallego’s recent appointment to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee has further raised questions about her priorities. The South Central Light Rail Extension project, meant to bring opportunity to South Phoenix, has been marred by repeated delays and poor planning, with little visible urgency from city leadership to correct course.
Frustrated residents feel left behind as the Mayor appears more invested in gaining a federal reputation than in ensuring the project delivers for her own community. Many argue that South Phoenix needs a present, accountable mayor—not one preoccupied with federal panels and D.C. connections.
